What is Afternoon Tea?

Afternoon tea originated in the 1840s as a way for Duchess Anna Maria Russell to curb her hunger between lunch and dinner, which were typically served much later in the day.

She began inviting friends to join her for tea and light snacks in the afternoon, a custom that quickly gained popularity among the upper classes.
