The Fairer Futures Programme for Young People

Catherine Smith, graduate said:

“The skills the programme has taught me have been invaluable. I, like everyone on the programme, have received help at a level that reflects both my experience and confidence. Having people in the cohort with similar experiences has been eye opening. You realise you’re not alone.”

Alex Bond , graduate said:

“It’s the people who really make the programme – they were all so passionate about helping us, while also making it fun and interesting to learn on the job. It was great.”

How we benefit our graduates

The aim of the programme is to give young people from Walsall all of the support they need to overcome the barriers they face when it comes to finding employment. This includes everything from undiscovered skills, insufficient qualifications or experience, low confidence and self-esteem, as well as an absence of suitable opportunities.

Phase one equips participants with transferable skills, including BTEC WorkSkills qualifications and Food Safety Level 2.

Phase two immerses trainees in hands-on experience across various Your Co-op Food departments in-store — from the shop floor to the bakery and coffee shop.

Our mission extends beyond skill-building; it’s about instilling confidence and self-belief for future employment.

Throughout the programme our trainees have access to –

An on-site programme leader who works with them to develop a uniquely tailored Support Plan.

A part time counsellor, as well as a programme assistant who acts as an inspirational work buddy and job coach.

Weekly well-being sessions with a psychotherapist and one-to-one counselling to focus on their individual challenges.

Support for 6-months post- graduation including writing CVs and covering letters, mock interview practice and a dynamic job club.
