Training, Young People, and Macaroons
Miss Macaroon was set up in 2011 as a baking company with a small kitchen and just a single member, and has now grown to become one of Birmingham’s most well renowned social enterprise companies in training young people. Our main products are the macaroons that give us our name – hand-made and Gluten-free!
Every penny made from our products goes towards helping unemployed young people aged 18-35 gain skills that will change their lives. The MacsMAD programme is at the forefront of our efforts for helping young people.
Miss Macaroon and the MacsMAD Training Scheme
The MacsMAD training programme is designed for young people aged 18-35, with a ten-week course tailored toward the individual needs of each group of trainees. This course is designed to help trainees address and overcome their personal barriers to employment as they go through training in the kitchen and shop.
- 45% of MacsMAD graduates are now in work, education, or training.
- 86% feel that the MacsMAD programme helped them to develop practical skills such as catering and food hygiene.
- 100% of trainees feel that MacsMAD has had a positive impact on their lives.
Miss Macaroon and Change Grow Live
Change Grow Live is a charity that has similar goals to Miss Macaroon. Their mission is to ‘help people change the direction of their lives’, and are guided by their own values – ‘be open, be compassionate, be bold’. Their ultimate goal is to make life safer and better for as many people as possible.
They started in 1977 with a group of volunteers, and used their resources to buy a house in order to help support people leaving prison. Over time, they opened more houses, and merged with other organisations to expand their services across the country. They eventually became an organisation that helps all people, not just people leaving prison, and they still uphold their primary goal – to make a difference in people’s lives.
Change Grow Live and the MacsMAD Training Scheme
Change Grow Live has worked with Miss Macaroon before. They referred a client to us for the MacsMAD training programme, and although this client has yet to start their course, the experience has so far been positive.
A quote taken from Change Grow Live regarding the MacsMAD programme – “Referral was easy. It was quiet for a while before [the] client was contacted; however, once he was contacted, he said that they are very friendly. He hasn’t started his course yet, but is happy with the telephone conversations so far’.
