When is Valentine’s Day 2025?
Valentine’s Day, sometimes also referred to as Saint Valentine’s Day or Feast of Saint Valentine is celebrated every year on 14th of February. Valentine’s Day 2025 will fall on Friday 14th February 2025. Order from Miss Macaroon by Thursday 13th February for delivery by Valentine’s Day or, alternatively, visit our store in Resorts World Birmingham over the week to pick up your treats!
Who was St Valentine?
Saint Valentine was a 3rd century Roman saint. A clergyman in the Roman Empire, he was martyred on 14th February, which has been observed as the Feast of Saint Valentine (or Saint Valentine’s Day) since 496 AD.
Since the High Middle Ages, Saint Valentine’s Day has become associated with the tradition of ‘courtly love’. Courtly love was a medieval idea of love that often involved knights going on adventures or performing deeds or services for ladies to win their love. By the 18th century, Saint Valentine’s Day had evolved into an occasion to express love by gifting your significant other flowers, confectionery and cards. As we know, these traditions are still common today!
What has Cupid got to do with it all?
In classical mythology, Cupid is known as the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection. His Greek counterpart is Eros. Depicted with wings and his signature bow and arrow, anyone shot by Cupid’s arrow was filled with uncontrollable desire. It’s understandable why Cupid would come to be associated with Valentine’s Day and be one of the most recognisable symbols of the occasion. Why is the heart associated with love?
Whether it be the ancient Romans or Greek philosophers, the heart has long played an important role in the concept of love. According to research conducted by senior scholar Marilyn Yalom for TED, the Romans believed that a vein ran from the fourth finger of the left hand to the heart, which is theorized to have contributed to what is now known as the ‘ring finger’ on which wedding rings are placed. Plato and Aristotle agreed that the heart was linked to the strongest emotions we feel, including love. The first known image of the heart shape we recognise today is said to have come in a French manuscript titled ‘The Romance of Alexander’ in 1344 and since then, heart imagery has been commonplace.
Others also consider the body’s reactions to attraction, such as the heart racing and feelings in the chest, to be why the heart has become associated with love. Miss Macaroon’s signature Valentine’s heart macaroons are sure to make your heart race with love just the same.
How to celebrate Valentine’s Day in lockdown
In recent years, occasions like Valentine’s Day have been affected by lockdowns. But staying safe and at home doesn’t mean you need to compromise on quality for you and your partner—this is a celebration of your love, after all.
You may not be able to dine at that fancy restaurant you’ve had your eye on or fly to a warm beach for a Valentine’s getaway, but you can still make your significant other feel loved from the comfort of their home! Leave plenty of time for all your favourite activities you may not get to do as often as you’d like. Enjoying a relaxed breakfast, playing board games, watching movies, before ending the day with your preferred dinner for two.
Spending time with your other half is the most important part, no matter your chosen stay-at-home activities. Paired with printed heart shaped macaroons, your Valentine’s will be filled with joy for you and your partner!
